Frequently Asked Questions

Motor Insurance

  • What is the difference between Open Drive & 3rd Party Extension on Cars? Open Drive covers drivers that meet specific criteria to drive your vehicle for the cover stated on the policy, e.g. full clean licence holders between the ages of 25 and 70.
  • Does value of a vehicle make a difference? Yes, generally the higher the value of the car the more premium you will pay. However a slight change in value may have no effect on your premium.
  • Am I covered if something mechanical goes wrong? A mechanical failure is not an insured peril. Your car’s warranty covers you against mechanical failure.
  • Will I lose my NCB if I claim for windscreen damage? No, a windscreen claim will not affect your no claims bonus, but you may be subject to a policy excess.
  • In relation to young drivers, what type of car should I buy? Can I drive other cars? For drivers under 25 we always recommend calling to our office prior to purchasing the vehicle. We can run a rate check for you.
  • What is an excess? This is the amount of money not covered in your policy. All policies carry an excess. E.g. If your excess is €250 and you are claiming for €5000, your insurance settlement will be for €4750.
  • What is Third Party Fire & Theft This provides you with basic cover for claims made against you, such as property damage and personal injury. The 'own damage' aspect provides cover for fire, theft and attempted theft.
  • What is Comprehensive cover This provides Third Party Fire & Theft cover and also accidental damage cover for your car. Windscreen cover and breakdown rescue can be included in all comprehensive policies if requested
  • What is bonus protection? There are two types of bonus protection: 1) Step back protection will reduce your no claims discount allowed in relation to a fault claim. 2) Protected no claims discount allows you to make a claim without reducing your no claims discount within the agreed time scale.
  • Is it possible to cancel your Motor insurance Yes you can cancel your insurance any time by returning your certificate and disc with a written request to cancel the policy from a specific date or time. Please be advised that you may be charged short term rates and/or cancellation fees in order to do this.
  • What does D.O.C stand for on car Insurance? Driving of other cars. Always check with your insurer if this is included or not. This is normally allowed for the proposer of the insurance policy. Strict terms apply to this extension.

Home Insurance

  • What is buildings cover This covers the home, the landlord's fixtures and fittings on or in the home, walls, gates, fences, hedges, terraces, patios, drives, paths, tennis hard courts and swimming pools, all at the situation of the premises shown in the schedule.
  • What is contents cover? This covers household goods, personal belongings and valuables (limits shown in the schedule) within your home which you or any other member of your household own.
  • How can I calculate the correct Buildings Cover for my home? This should be based on the rebuild costs of the house and not the market value. Please visit the Chartered Surveyors Ireland website to work out the rebuilding cost of your property.
  • Am I insured if someone (i.e. a tradesman) is working in my home? We recommend checking that the tradesman has public and employer’s liability insurance when carrying out repairs in your house. Most policies have cover for domestic employees such as cleaners and au pairs.
  • What does Accidental Cover apply to/mean? This covers you for accidents that you cause to the buildings and/or contents as the owner of the premises. It is normally included at an additional premium.
  • What is All Risks Cover? All Risks Cover allows you to cover individual items while you are outside the home. You have the option of covering a specific value or each individual item.
