AA report: Government not doing enough to tackle high cost of motor insurance

In a hard-hitting report released this week, AA Ireland say the Government and the insurance industry need to do more to tackle the high cost of motor insurance.

The motoring group claim that very little has changed since the Government's Cost of Insurance Working Group released its report in January of last year. In fact, motorists are now in a worse position than the start of the motor insurance crisis, according to AA Ireland chief executive Brendan Nevin.

AA have also suggested that a number of responsibilities be taken out of the hands of the industry and put under the remit of an independent body, while also calling for regulatory and legislative changes. Insurance discs should be abolished, they say, in favour of an automated camera system that detects drivers who are not covered.

Together, it said these would reduce fraud and legal costs while increasing transparency within the industry.

Responding to the report, the Government said there was no 'silver bullet' to address the issue of high insurance costs, but it believed that significant progress had been made in dealing with the issue.
