Young Drivers: 7 Simple Steps to Lower the Cost of Your Car Insurance

Posted on Dec 08, 2015

We all know that young drivers generally pay more for their car insurance than older, more experienced road users. This can be frustrating but unfortunately the statistics back it up: drivers under the age of 25 are more likely to be involved in an accident. And for insurance companies, the greater the risk, the higher the price of your insurance. You might be the safest driver on the road but if you’re young, you have to pay.

At GMHD we know an expense like this can put a great deal of strain on any young person’s finances so we’ve put together a list of seven simple steps to help you reduce the cost of your insurance.

1. Choose a simple car

Big, powerful SUVs and speedy sports cars may seem attractive but they’re certainly not the right option if you’re a young driver trying to save money on your car insurance. These kinds of vehicles are generally involved in more expensive accidents and they’re also more likely to be stolen, two factors which will undoubtedly drive up your premium.

Choosing a modest car with a few miles on the clock should help you save money.

2. Keep it secure

If possible, park your car in a driveway or in a garage overnight. A good alarm system is also a bonus. Any measure that reduces the chances of your car being damaged or stolen is always a good idea.

3. Take lessons

Even if you feel as though you’re an expert driver, having proof that you’ve taken professional driving lessons will help with insurance costs.

4. Get on your parents’ policy

This will allow you to build up a safety record and named driving experience, two factors which insurance companies take into account when young drivers want to go out on their own. It also gives you the opportunity to get your full licence before taking out your own insurance policy!

5. Get a full licence

When you pass your test and get your full licence, you should find that your insurance quotes aren’t as scary as they used to be.

6. Be safe!

It might sound obvious but DRIVE CAREFULLY and adhere to the rules of the road! Not only will this reduce your chances of having an accident and keep you, your passengers and other road users safe, it’ll have the added bonus of saving you money. If the penalty points and accidents pile up, so too will the cost of your insurance.

7. Let do the hard work!

Shopping around for insurance can be a real chore. At we compare quotes with over twenty insurance companies so you know you’re getting the best deal possible. Just call, visit or drop in today to save money on your car insurance.
