Returning construction workers put off by car insurance costs

Irish construction workers who emigrated during the economic downturn are being deterred from returning to Ireland by the high cost of car insurance, a survey has revealed. Over 40% of those polled said the cost of motor insurance is a serious issue.

According to the SCSI/PwC Construction Market Monitor Report for 2018, there is between a 53% and 84% shortfall in the number of construction workers by Ireland at the moment but many of the Irish tradesmen and women currently living abroad say the cost of living is too high at home.

“Reports indicate that the combination of current problems in housing, motor insurance, and banking will result in a dearth of a much-needed skilled labour force in Ireland. Insurers will either not quote returning emigrants or will make it prohibitively expensive for them to take out insurance,” David Shaw, director of XS Direct Insurance told The Irish Times.

Many insurers tell returning emigrants, especially over 30s, that they would only be prepared to quote once they had at least a year’s no-claims discount in their own name.

Fortunately, Liberty and XS Direct are willing to facilitate people in this specific category, enabling them to at least get on the road and start building up their no-claims discount again.
