Health and safety at your desk

Compared to mining or cleaning windows on high-rise buildings, it’s fair to say that a desk job is a relatively safe way of making a living.

But just because your job isn’t likely to put your life in danger, that doesn’t mean it’s doing you no harm. Poor working habits or faulty/inadequate equipment could be putting an unnecessary strain on your body. Here are a few pointers to help you operate safely and efficiently at your desk.

Your desk

Your work desk should be big enough for your monitor/computer, keyboard, mouse, documents, stationery and anything else you need to do your job. You should have flexibility and be able to move things around comfortably.

Your chair

You sit on your chair for the majority of your working day. Having a bad one can do serious damage. Your seat should be stable and adjustable, as should your seatback. The seat width should be wider than your hips. It might also be a good idea for you (or your employer) to invest in a footrest for added comfort.

Your posture

Having the right kind of chair and desk is pointless if you don’t have the right posture. Try to position yourself so the top of the monitor is at eye level and your forearms are horizontal. Make sure everything you need can be easily reached.

It’s also important to avoid sitting in the same position for extended periods of time. Stand up for a minute or two every hour and move around. Your back will thank you!
