Driving during Phase 2 – Where can we go?

Posted on Jun 15, 2020

As of Monday, June 8, we are now in Phase 2 of the government’s Roadmap for Reopening Society. Thankfully certain travel restrictions have been lifted and we’re sure many of you are relishing the opportunity to get back out on the open road. But we must exercise caution and, of course, stick to the new guidelines.

So, what are they?

1. The five-kilometre radius for non-essential journeys has been scrapped. You may now travel anywhere within your own county, or up to 20km into a neighbouring county if you live near the county bounds. Despite this change in restrictions, you should still avoid unnecessary journeys as much as possible and practice social distancing among people you don’t love with once you reach your destination.

2. You may still travel more than 20km beyond the county bounds for specified essential reasons such as for work, accessing medical services or providing care.

3. Public transport has operated with different timetables during restrictions, but most services will have returned to regular timetables as of last Monday. Certain measures, such as reduced capacity and seating restrictions, will continue during Phase 2. You are advised to use a Leap Card and wear a mask while riding on public transport.

In addition to following these guidelines, it is advisable to give your car a check-up, especially if it has been largely unused during the past three months. Inactivity can sometimes lead to certain mechanical and maintenance issues so make sure everything is proper working order before taking to the road. Consider taking it to a professional just to be on the safe side.

Many people will be returning to work at this time so be wary of increased traffic levels and, as always, stay safe out there.

All the best,

The Team at GMHD.ie
