Driving after Brexit – how will things change?

Posted on Feb 24, 2020

As you may have noticed, the United Kingdom officially left the EU on January 31. This will naturally affect UK and EU citizens in a number of ways, from commerce and travel to work and healthcare.

Many Irish citizens drive and use their license in Northern Ireland and across the Irish Sea, either from time to time or on a permanent basis, and a number of UK motorists do the same in Ireland. There have understandably been concerns that these practices will be under threat post-Brexit, but the good news for Irish citizens who wish to use their license and vehicle in the UK is that the rules will not change for them.

The Irish Embassy to London has confirmed that Ireland and the UK’s agreement in relation to Irish people driving in Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales will remain the same as it was pre-Brexit.

“The UK Government’s stated position is that, post-Brexit, arrangements for EU license holders who are visiting or living in the UK would not change,” the embassy has confirmed. “Visitors to the UK with driving licenses from EU Member States will enjoy the same arrangements as [before].”

The situation facing UK motorists who wish to drive in EU countries is more complicated. There will be different arrangements in place with each country, although the Irish Embassy has confirmed that UK drivers will still be able to drive in Ireland on holidays.

For other countries and longer stays, International Driving Permits may be necessary, as may Green Cards from insurers as proof of cover.

As always, it is recommended that you contact your insurance provider if you are in any doubt about your rights or obligations.
