The car of the future is closer than you think

There’s still no sign of the flying cars predicted by 80s movies but the motor industry is bringing out futuristic tech at an incredible rate. Here are some of the more interesting innovations expected to be rolled out in the coming years.

1. Cars that talk to each other

Just like that car movie about cars, Cars, cars of the future may be able to communicate with one another. But instead of heading off on madcap adventures together, cars with V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) communication will be able to share information about their location and trajectory, helping them to avoid collisions.

2. Self-driving cars

Some cars can already park themselves but the next progression, fully self-driving cars, is just around the corner. One of the more appealing aspects of self-driving cars is the potential for reducing traffic. Self-driving cars would in all likelihood have the ability to platoon, i.e. multiple cars joining up and driving in close proximity. It is believed that this would decrease the number of accidents as vehicles would be communicating with and reacting to one another simultaneously.

3. AR dashboards

Augmented reality is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view. Some new cars already have displays on the windshield but carmakers are working on advanced AR technology that would overlay info on what the driver is seeing in real life, in real time. An example would be highlighting an oncoming vehicle in order to avoid accidents, much like a computer game.

4. External airbags

We’re all familiar with airbags inside the car but Mercedes are working on an innovative feature that would make airbags deploy on underneath the car before a crash. The airbags would deploy when it is determined that a collision is imminent, doubling the braking speed of the vehicle in the process.

5. Health monitoring

Ford has previously toyed with the idea of introducing a steering wheel or seatbelt that would monitor your vital statistics so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that another company would push the button on a similar feature. This, coupled with an emergency autonomous overdrive function, could be useful if a driver were to experience a medical emergency, such as a heart attack.
